ASS – Amplified Sopranino Sax
Virginia Genta’s sopranino sax mixes and overlaps with noise and electricity thanks to a technique that comes from a very simple idea: amplifying the sax – as if it were a guitar – allows to introduce new textures born from feedback, which reacts capriciously to motion of circular breathing that feeds it. A bizarre dynamic is triggered that transfigures the physical limits of the sopranino into the hypnotic voice produced by other instruments of the popular tradition – zorna, ciaramella, bagpipe – bizarrely enhanced. Virginia Genta’s solos are extraordinary sonic tapestries that can reach the intensity of a screaming tempest, offering a listening experience similar to sticking your head out the window of a speeding vehicle and trying to catch your breath. The key is to let it wash over you, to concede to the currents and go with the flow. Spirited free music.
Virginia Genta is a visual artist and self-taught musician resident in the Po Delta but constantly on the move. She is devoted to experimental research as a tool for personal human and spiritual development. Beginning from early ‘00s she’s been focusing on improvised music, picking saxophone as her favourite instrument, and pairing this up with a vivid interest for flutes and keyboards. These years’ long explorations has brought her project Jooklo Duo to tour massively around Europe, North America, Russia and China, and to a myriad of collaborations with artists of the international free scene (including Chris Corsano, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Sonic Youth, Hartmut Geerken and many others) and fellow travelers. Her live activities have always grown parallel to a constant audio documentation rich of the most disparate recordings, some of whom published by Troglosound, the label that Virginia runs together with David Vanzan, focusing on obscure underground and outsider music in limited editions and organizing some informal and memorable events.
